Dave Allen

Dave Allen is the Director, Insights and Digital Media for Portland-based integrated marketing, interactive, brand and design firm, Nemo Design, where he plans and manages the company’s forward thinking strategies in the areas of Social Media, radical transparency, blogging and Web 2.0. Nemo’s clients include Nike, Hewlett Packard, Skullcandy and Smith Optics.

Allen is also a founding member and bass player for the post-punk band Gang of Four who recently completed a world tour after an entirely unexpected three year reunion.

His past career includes time spent at Intel as Director, Business Development, where his role was to negotiate music licensing contracts for Internet-connected products such as MP3 players and home entertainment servers. Prior to Intel, Allen served as General Manager, Los Angeles, for EMusic.com where he was in charge of licensing music catalogues for the online distribution of music in the DRM-free MP3 format. He has been invited to appear on and moderate panels at conferences such as SXSW, CMJ, Webvisions, Future of Music Coalition, SanFran MusicTech, Grammy MusicTech and many more. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Chapter of the Grammy Organization.

He posts his rather contrarian and oppositional views regarding Social Media and companies attempts to market their brands using social network platforms, on the Nemo blog Social Cache.

Allen’s highly-trafficked music and MP3 blog, Pampelmoose.com, gives insight into his thinking about how the major label recording industry has been derailed by the internet and why he believes in the “feels free” idea of music delivery.

Allen has made his home in Portland, Oregon since 2000.
