Tim Smith
A digital rights pioneer with a passion for technology that empowers people involved in the business of digital media creation and distribution.
Currently Tim is the founder and CEO of MyWerx, LLC. MyWerx is an ownership validation solution. MyWerx helps its community achieve the Freedom to Create.
Tim is a second generation music industry professional with 30 years of IT and Copyright Administration experience.
He was a 1983 Belmont University Music Business Alum, and returned to academics in 2002 to get an MBA with a focus in technology management.
His career began in 1980 preparing royalty statements on green ledger sheets for the music Group Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show where his Father, Terry Smith, was running the publishing company.
In 1982 Terry and Tim started Copyright Management Inc,. The company grew to manage over 1000 publishing companies over 100,000 copyrights and had representatives in all major international markets. The catalogues spanned Film and TV companies like Columbia Pictures and Dick Clark Productions, and all genres from Rachmaninoff to Motorhead. Nashville’s finest independent songwriters were at the core of CMI’s customer base.
Tim left CMI in 1992 to start a business management and technology company called The Zeal Group. Zeal became an “Inner Circle partner for Microsoft (top 1% of sales globally). Tim built then sold the company in 1999.
In 2000 Tim co-founded Copyright.net with three Belmont alumni. “We were way too diverse. We had a number one single with Kenny Chesney in our publishing company, we released the first Blue Collar Comedy Live record on our record label, we had several signed acts under management, and we had a technology that entered the market prematurely attempting to legitimize p2p file sharing. The company sold its disparate pieces in 2002.
From 2002 to 2008 Tim started a technology consulting company, merged it with a large regional CPA firm and developed enterprise level solutions in many vertical markets including Health Care and Manufacturing. His team was awarded a Microsoft Pinnacle award for its innovative use of Microsoft technologies.
Prior to starting MyWerx he served as the CIO for Simplex Diabetes.
