DRASTIC MEASURES: NEW METRICS IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS
With the advent of Big Champagne in 2000, the music industry began a reluctant shift from measuring success according to radio charts and album sales to a much more complex array of metrics, most of them generated by activity on the internet. It is now possible to monitor file sharing at the zip code level, blog or message board mentions, video plays and much more. New companies are developing web crawlers that automate the process of monitoring music sites. Others are slicing and dicing fan data to sift casual fans from super-fans who may be more easily engaged in a promotion or viral marketing project.  The panel will investigate not only the new technologies that allow fresh and nuanced views of an artist’s growth but the shift in perspective necessary to quantify progress in an era of declining physical sales.
