Terry McBride – CEO and Co-Founder/Owner, Nettwerk Music Group
Terry McBride is the CEO and one of three founders of the Nettwerk Music Group, which includes Nettwerk Productions (Canada’s largest independent record label), Nettwerk Management (artist, DJ and producer management), Nettwerk One (publishing), and Artwerks (graphic and fashion design). Founded in Terry's apartment in 1984, Nettwerk now has major corporate offices in Vancouver, New York, London, Boston, Nashville, Hamburg and Los Angeles. Nettwerk Management exclusive clients include such artists as Avril Lavigne, Barenaked Ladies, Dido, Stereophonics, Sarah McLachlan, All Saints and Jamiroquai. Since its inception, Nettwerk has released over 400 different albums with worldwide sales in excess of 100 million albums. Most recently, Terry’s attentions have focused on advances in digital technology, intellectual property rights and the future of music distribution. |

As the comprehensive intellectual property segment of the day, this panel will illustrate the complexity and seeming impossibility of the negotiations between trade organizations representing the music industry and legislators in Washington DC. Current copyright law harkens back to the days of piano scrolls and “popular music” songbooks. Lawsuits abound, consumers think music should be free, and technology companies say copyrights stifle innovation. As a worldwide hub for songwriters, publishers and several music genres, what is Nashville’s role in these discussions? Who will win and who will lose; is a win-win even possible? Much is at stake in this struggle for everyone’s fair share of the music pie.

Before joining RIAA in 2003, Bainwol held many high-ranking political positions, including former Chief of Staff to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN), Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and chief of staff to U.S. Senator Connie Mack (R-FL) for nine years.
Bainwol has brought to the RIAA a lengthy track record of developing strategic initiatives, a consummate insider's understanding of political nuance in Washington, and a strong reputation as an articulate and highly effective leader. As a seasoned policymaker, he is one of the Washington's most recognized and respected strategists and possesses a unique blend of political, legislative, and communications skills. He puts these talents to great use as he helps promote two of his favorite American traditions: music and property rights. |
